Chapter 6

Aside from being absolutely incredible, sex with Steve had provided the solution to a previously unsolvable mystery. I finally got what the fuss was all about. Why women lusted after men. Why my mother had made the mistakes she’d made. Why women wore stilettos and tight skirts and starved themselves to become svelte man magnets. Why they did everything they possibly could to be more attractive to the opposite sex.

Until they found the right one.

After being blind all my life, my moment of clarity had come at last.

How could I possibly go back to Frederick now? And even if I did, would my sexual awakening carry over to him?

I had no earthly idea.

The funniest part of it was that Steve probably hadn’t a clue as to what he’d done. Granted, I was the first woman to attract his attention in quite some time, so perhaps he had some idea as to how I felt, but his dry spell didn’t encompass his entire adult life the way mine had. Not to put too fine a point on the matter, I was stunned speechless. Did people actually say things like, “Wow! I’m impressed!” at such a moment? Maybe not. However, it seemed appropriate to acknowledge the one time the earth had actually moved.

Unfortunately, my stomach spoke up first, reminding me of all that had occurred since that cheeseburger and coconut pie.

Steve’s chuckle reverberated through places that had never known laughter before. “Hungry?”

I hesitated, savoring the marvelous sensation of him moving inside me. “Mmm…maybe a little, although you wouldn’t think it from the lunch I had. Must be all the fresh air and wide-open spaces—”

“—and brushes with death?”

His eyes twinkled. I’d heard about twinkling eyes before, but his were the first I’d ever actually seen do it. Perhaps I was paying more attention than usual. I shifted my focus to his mouth, then his cheek. Unable to discover any part of his face that didn’t beg to be kissed, I gazed past his ear as I spoke.

“Let’s see now… In one day, I’ve nearly died from dehydration, been chased by a tornado, rode a horse solo for the first time, and now I’ve ridden a cowboy—or maybe he rode me. Still not sure about that, but either way, that’s enough excitement to give anyone an appetite.”

“Good thing I made that pie.” Clearly, he’d missed the most significant factor. Or perhaps he hadn’t. Sighing, he stroked my cheek with his knuckles. “Don’t think I want to move, though. Lying here with you feels so good.”

Afterglow. Yet another state I’d never understood, much less experienced. Echoing his sigh, I abandoned my attempt to stare off into space and traced the curve of his lips with a fingertip. “I’ll second that.”

“Still, I wouldn’t want you to starve to death because I kept you pinned down on the couch.”

“I can think of worse ways to die.” Despite my stomach’s protests, I felt more sated than ever before, albeit from a different type of sustenance—one I’d missed throughout my entire life.
